Pattern Details

Pincushions are one of my favorite ways to use up scraps. They are nearly instant gratification projects, which is helpful too. Make several pincushions... some to keep and some to give to your sewing friends! Pincushions can be stuffed with polyester fiberfill, crushed walnut shells or even play sand. Crushed walnut shells are my favorite filling for pincushions 5” square or smaller. They are available for purchase at most larger pet stores. Pincushions finish at the following sizes: Herringbone (top left) 2 1/2" x 6" Sewing Machine (top right) 4" square Wonky Star (middle left) 4 1/4" square Courthouse Steps (middle right) 4 1/2" square Pinstripes (bottom) 2" x 8 1/2" Sewing Machine and Courthouse steps are paper pieced. This pattern assumes that you have basic paper piecing skills.

Recommended with this pattern

  • fabric scraps
  • lightweight fusible interfacing (such as Pellon SF101) for each pincushion (1" larger than finished size)
  • thin cotton batting for each pincushion (1" larger than finished size)
