Check out the possibilities for using script on your quilts as quilt artist Heather Thomas shows off quilts that feature beautiful free-motion stitched script. Learn about her process and the basics of her technique.
Choose a favorite quote, a short poem or sentiment, then grab some paper and a pencil and let Heather walk you through several practice techniques as you begin to learn how to fit your selected words and letters on the surface of your quilt. Feel like a kid again as you practice your cursive, playing with tall letters, dangling tails, dotting your i’s and crossing your t’s.
Learn to use Heather’s choice for marking on the surface of your quilts; the Hera marker, as you section out the area of your quilt that you plan to write on. Then Heather will show you how quick and easy it is to baste your quilt with silk pins. After this segment, you’ll be ready to start stitching!
Begin by learning all about creating beautiful, complex monograms that can be used as standalone designs or as the first letter at the beginning of a sentence. Then, Heather will lead you through stitching out the first pass of your entire selection of script.
Now you’re ready to add all of the extras to your stitched words with three more stitching passes. You'll thicken up the lines, add flourishes and use thread painting techniques, then tidy up the lines and edges. After all this practice you will be all set to write on your next quilt with ease.

Description

Learn how easy and satisfying it can be to write in beautiful cursive or script on the surface of your quilts. Whether you simply want to sign your quilts in the stitching, tell your personal story or share your world view, writing on your quilts using easy-to-master, free-motion stitching techniques will give you the opportunity to add very personal touches to your work.

In this class, quilt artist, Heather Thomas, will teach you:

  • – How to determine the size, scale and spacing of your lettering
  • – How to fit your selected words on the surface of your quilt
  • – How to use a four-pass method that will yield tidy results with tight edges, fancy curls, areas of thread painting, and lots more.

After stitching through this class with Heather, not only will you be able to write beautiful sentiments in the borders and body of your quilts, you’ll be able to stitch out beautiful monograms, too.

This class is for any skill level and any stitchers who want to add more pizazz to their work. Included with your class is a sample alphabet lettering guide for your next project using free-motion script.

Heather is a mixed media fiber artist with a passion for color and a dedication to teaching. After a decade of making original yet traditional work, she began venturing out toward art quilting, embellishments, and mixed media work. With more than 12 years of studying and teaching color and design under her belt, she wrote her second book, A Fiber Artists’ Guide to Color & Design, which came on the heels of her very popular first book, Fabric Embellishing: The Basics & Beyond. In 2011 Heather was a guest writer for Quilting Arts magazine with a multi-part feature on Free Style Machine Quilting.
