I make the simpler blocks (like this one) into nine 4-1/2 in. blocks and the not as simple into four 6-1/2 in. blocks. I have one 12-1/2 in. block but I'm really not happy with it so I'm thinking about making 6-1/2 blocks for that one instead. It's a lot more work but I get experience trying out colors and scaling down dimensions. My sister will decide what blocks go where and I will figure out how to sew them together. It will be a challenge sewing these two different block sizes together. I see lots of sashing in my future. Needless to say, it will be a modern quilt!
