PATTERN DETAILS

Contrasting "ribbon" bows tie up these crayon-colored hearts in a quilt that's sure to please as a gift for a newborn. Use as a wall hanging or lap quilt for a nursery or child's room. Or, make it in your favorite fabrics and colors to commemorate a special anniversary or a wedding, or make it just because you love quilts with hearts! For a baby quilt, change the center heart and the borders to a gender-appropriate color for the newborn as needed. For an anniversary or wedding quilt, choose the couple's favorite colors. It's the perfect way to use up scraps, too. You might want to use all the blues or all the reds in your collection for the hearts and bows and add white for the background to make a scrappy two-color quilt with this design. Or, try it in bright batiks or soft pastels. The options are as endless as your imagination and your stash. You can use this as an album or friendship quilt, too. The ribbon bands on the hearts are wide enough for a signature, so this quilt would be a wonderful "family tree" or shower gift. Have family members or shower guests use a permanent marking pen to sign each of the blocks. Write the baby's name and birth date in the ribbon band of the large heart. You can add the parents' names to the bow streamers if you wish. The hearts are easy to applique using your favorite method. I suggest using fusible applique for the bows on the small hearts since the pieces are small. If you choose fusible applique for the hearts, I recommend using the "Window-Frame Fusible Applique" method included in the pattern so the hearts do not become too stiff. The multi-colored sashing is quick and easy to make using simple strip piecing. Add a hanging sleeve to the back of the finished quilt and don't forget to add a special label to identify the maker. I am a published sewing and quilting author with several books and many magazine articles to my credit. My most recent book, How to Make a Quilt was published in August 2014 by Storey Publishing. I've written two other successful books for them-- The Quilting Answer Book and The Sewing Answer Book. I learned to sew from my great grandmother, two grandmothers, and my Mom when I was barely in grade school and I've been sewing ever since. I added quilting to my repertoire in the 1980s and worked for a major quilt book publisher as Managing Editor and then Editor-in-Chief for 5 years. Now I have my own business, designing quilts and tote bags and anything else that strikes my fancy. Go to www.joyofsewingandquilting.blogspot.com to see my projects and whatever else I'm up to.
