Pattern Details

I have had two trips to the seaside recently. One was a family trip, and the other a school trip to the sealife centre in Brighton. Lots of inspiration there. I thought I would have a little change from my bugs, and have a go at designing a small collections of sea creatures. There are a few more in the pipeline. This starfish is very simple to knit. It is all done on 2 needles. As in all my patterns I tell you exactly how many stitches you should have at the end of each row, and detail every row so you know exactly how far you have to go. This is what I like in a pattern. Each leg is knitted separately, so there is a bit of sewing up. I was particularly pleased with the overall shape, and the base of the starfish. I have a dried starfish in my bathroom, which I used as a model. The spots were a bit of an after thought. I did think I had finished, but then looking again at photos of starfish, thought that the spots really added something. The pattern tells you how to link to a short picture tutorial on my blog, which shows you exactly how to sew a french knot if you want to add spots to your starfish.

The inspiration for my knitting patterns often comes from nature. I love little knitting projects, and try my hardest to be realistic with my plant and animal designs. Often my projects start from something very personal: my own house or my husband's first car. Then I develop them into something that I think will be appealing. I live on the outskirts of London, and work part-time at a local school. My own children are always doing something creative. At school I love the days when we get really messy.
