Airport convenience store, long flight ahead. The neck pillows catch your eye. Great function. Terrible form. Bulky, ugly, awkward. Likely too flimsy to offer real support. This is better. The pillow scarf; it makes an incredible scarf (or shawl or hoodie) too. Wear it as a fashion statement: comfort and style merged. A bias strip, it takes advantage of stockinette stitch's tendency to roll to, well, roll. It makes a warm scarf that doesn't slip down to your shoulders; and a substantial neck pillow when worn doubled or in thirds. With it's swingy, colorful fringe, it moves, too. An easy knit. Worked with two yarns held together, the body knits up fast. The I-cord fringe does take some dedication, but you're worth it. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY YO K2Tog I-cord; explained in the pattern Short rows, wrap and turn; explained in the pattern GAUGE about 2.5 stitches per inch, but giver or take a bit won't matter. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS One size, about 72" long, minus fringe, depending on yarns used

Recommended with this pattern

  • 450 yards solid-color worsted to bulky weight yarn; choose this yarn for softness next to the skin. I've used 100% merino yarns; 100% silk, and 50% wool blended with silk, alpaca, or angora successfully
  • 600 yards of a multi-colored yarn, long color repeating yarns such as Noro Kureyon work great, because each I-cord fringe tends to have it's own color. I've also used or an assortment of leftover yarns in vibrant colors, changing the yarns randomly.
  • US 10/6 mm circular needle, 24" or single point needle; circular needle recommended; the work is done back and forth on it, but it supports the weight better.

Living in Maine, knitting seems like the best art form of all. The cold winters, cool summer nights, the wealth of fiber farms, and the beautiful landscape inspire me to the needles, to soft fibers, and to bright color to warm the heart.
