PATTERN DETAILS

This market bag was knitted up with three strands of Nettle yarn that was sourced and hand spun in Nepal. The yarn is lace weight and only one ply. Three strands knitted together makes for a very sturdy, durable market bag. Nettle yarn comes from the fiber of the nettle plant and has been used for hundreds of years in Nepal to make everything from rope to clothing. The yarn starts out stiff and can be challenging to work with at first. However, the more you handle it and wash it (machine washable, hypoallergenic, and anti-bacterial), the softer it becomes. And once you get going with this pattern, it moves along quickly. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY You should already know how to knit, purl, pick up stitches, and make an I-cord. GAUGE Gauge is not critical for this project.

My mom taught me to crochet and sew when I was a child. I learned to knit a few years ago. I have always enjoyed fiber arts as a hobby. Now I have started a new venture. I have an online store called World Village Fibers. My goal is to eventually open a shop in my hometown. Update: I'm very fortunate to have found a nice space for a small fiber arts shop/studio and plan to open in 2012!
