The Classic Tailored Shirt - Men

Project Description

What are you most proud of? That I actually finished and got a wearable shirt! Pam Howard's advice in the class was very helpful. What advice would you give someone starting this project? For me, the most difficult parts were attaching collars and cuffs to the shirt itself. You have to make sure all the seams, outside and inside, are aligned perfectly before you start stitching, otherwise the seam lines will be off. Cut precisely, and sew accurate seam lines.

What you will need

  • Cotton-poly bedsheet from thrift store Pellon SF101 Shape-Flex interfacing Gutterman all-purpose thread

Q&A with Mike Portuesi

zinc6 asked:
very nice - you seem to have done a great job for the first shirt and the fit is excellent on you.
Mike Portuesi answered:
Thank you! I can't take credit for the fit, because I didn't alter the pattern. I was pleased with how well the pattern did fit, but I will try altering it for the next shirt.
Davesmom asked:
Great fitting shirt. Did you have to do any alterations to pattern before you cut it out? How long have you been sewing? I ordered this class this week-end and hope to make shirts that fit me. I find most blouses fit me everywhere except for my upper arm area. I have never made a shirt before.
Mike Portuesi answered:
Davesmom - I didn't alter the pattern at all. I decided to make it as a muslin and then alter the pattern for the next go-around. I will lengthen the sleeves, as expected, as my arms are a bit long. I've been sewing for one year at this point, and before this I've made T-shirts, boxers, pajamas, and a few home dec projects. This class is really clear and easy to follow and I think your first shirt will turn out great.
Barbara_J asked:

Mike Portuesi answered:
Thank you so much! I'm as surprised as anyone how well it turned out.
Scheri Manson asked:
