Fantastic Fireflies Bag

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I love my daughter's fabric design. It was so fun incorporating it into a functional item for her to use and enjoy. I also love upcycling so I'm always proud when I can take something that would have otherwise been discarded and transform it into something beautiful and useful. I'm impressed that the bag turned out exactly how my daughter and I envisioned (without a pattern even)! What advice would you give someone starting this project? Use a pattern! :)

What you will need

  • In addition to the custom fabric used on the flap of the bag
  • we cut up and upcycled an old button up cotton shirt. The inside of the purse is fully lined (no exposed seams) and includes the pocket from the front of the shirt. We also used some cotton webbing for the messenger bag strap
  • a cute flower button
  • and a neon green zipper (chosen by the eccentric fabric designer herself).

Q&A with Sew Me a Garden

junelizzie asked:
I love this bag! Your stitching is beautiful. I love the colours of the fabrics and the way you have used an old shirt for the lining and incorporated the pockets. And I am trying to work out how on earth you managed to put the zip in (and so neatly) to that shape of bag!!
Sew Me a Garden answered:
Thanks so much! Both the inside and outside are single pieces of fabric (no seam on the bottom - just up the sides). There is a 1" or so piece on the backside that attaches to the zipper and then the flap is attached to that and the bigger piece of outer fabric - I sewed that part shut last (by hand) so that was my hole for turning. It was a rather convoluted way to sew a bag, I admit!
