Basic Jacket

Project Description

What are you most proud of? All of it! I learned so much while constructing this jacket and I was so proud of finishing it I even added a handmade tag to it. I loved the embellished jacket in the class but wasn't sure I'd be able to make it considering I'd never even made something so complex with my sewing machine, let alone by hand. So I did this basic version in black jersey with a purple thread. I figured if I was going to so much trouble to handsew it then I wanted all that work to show! I also worked up a sample for the fabrics and thread choices I'll be using in the embellished version. I love the deep purple 100% organic Australian cotton jersey I found and can't wait to get started. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't hesitate. It doesn't need to be perfect, the imperfections are what will make it unique. For those who are in Australia like myself and can't get the recommended Button Craft thread, I used 4 strands of the Rasant 120 thread in my construction and it's holding up really well. I also used a backstitch when I was sewing the pocket bag together for a little extra strength.

What you will need

  • Cotton Jersey
  • Rasant thread

Thank-you! And yes, I will be doing the embellished version of the coat. I'm actually cutting out the second layer today so I can start the stencilling.

Oh very nice! I'm going to be doing a basic jacket too, I think, and what a nice idea to use contrasting thread. You should be proud.

Thank-you for the lovely comment.

Lovely work. Can you tell me where you found your australian organic cotton jersey?
Strange answered:
I got mine from I recommend getting swatches though, because most the colours look extremely different to the pictured colours on the site.
