I am a mother of a son with Autism as well as a COTA (Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant). I have heard countless parents ask how they can make a weighted vest for their child. There just isn't a lot of good info out there, especially all in one place. With this pattern, I show you how to make a weighted vest, and also give you detailed instructions on how to weight it. I suggest using washers and padding them instead of bulky rice or poly beads. This is a less bulky and more comfortable way to add weight. A girl ruffle version and basic casual version are included. This is a project for an experienced beginner. Email support is always available if you get stuck. Included in the e-file: -full size patterns for 12 sizes of vests: 18 Months, 2T, 3T, 4T, 5T, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12. -tutorials and pattern pieces for faux flap pockets and ruffle pockets -materials list and information on making weights -sizing information -detailed instructions with photos How can this vest help a child with Autism or Sensory Processing Disorder? Extra weight provides proprioceptive input to the joints. Proprioceptive input can affect the behavior of a child with sensory needs. Propioceptive input can calming to a child who is hyperactive and can be stimulating to a child who is lethargic. It can also help children pay attention better. Always use a weighted vest under the supervison of an Occupational Therapist. If you are interested in a pattern in larger sizes, please let me know. I will make larger sizes if there is enough demand. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Basic sewing skills Sewing Curves Buttons and Buttonholes SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 18 months - 12 youth

I started making sewing patterns when I was pregnant with my third child. I had insomnia, so I would stay up at night thinking about how to make baby shoes! I love to create, and I especially love to figure out how things are made. I dabble in all kinds of crafts, but my first love is sewing.
