Pattern Details

The beloved fairy tale, "The Princess and the Pea", was the inspiration for my Princess Pillow Collection. These three coordinating throw pillows are a fun way to add a splash of color and magic to a little girl's room. A combination of machine applique and basic patchwork piecing that works perfectly for that assortment of favorites from your fabric "stash". Make one pillow, or all three. The applique pieces are sewn on with a tight zigzag stitch. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS The Princess and the Pea pillow is 21.5" square the carriage and castle pillows are both 17.5" square

  • The Princess and the Pea Pillow Set Pattern Dimensions: The Princess and the Pea Pillow measures 21.5" square The carriage and castle pillows are both 17.5" square Materials: ***This materials list gives the requirements for making all three pillows. ***I've described the fabrics that I used. Other fabrics can, of course, be substituted. --1/2 yard solid soft white or off-white quilting weight fabric for the center "block" (I used Robert Kaufman's Kona Cotton in the color "snow") ---1/2 yard white flannel or other white soft woven cotton-used as backing underneath the white block -it provides a stabilizer for the appliqu work and makes a nice "lining" behind the white pillow center --1 1/8 yard print quilting weight print fabric for the backs of the three pillows (I used an aqua floral) --1 1/8 yards low loft quilt batting-I use "Warm and Natural" --1 1/8 yards muslin or any inexpensive lightweight cotton fabric --for a backing behind the batting-allowing for "quilting" the pillow top together with the embroidery stitches) --1 yard "Wonder Under" - (product #805 made by Pellon) - an iron-on adhesive to fuse appliqu to background fabric (available in fabric stores-sold by the yard-22" wide) --one fat quarter fabric for the bed frame -a solid or tiny dot fabric is best --1/4 yard fabric for the carriage-again a solid or very small print would be best --one 4" x 5" piece of yellow, brown, black or reddish fabric for princess hair --one 3" x 3" piece of flesh colored fabric for princess face and hands --one 6" x 6" piece of fabric appropriate for the two clouds on the castle pillow --a variety of 14-15 different small print fabrics in contrasting colors -these will be used for most of the appliqu designs and for the patchwork borders. It is important to assemble an adequate variety of fabrics with a broad range of colors and prints to provide sufficient contrast ***see photos for examples of contrasting fabrics ***If you're purchasing these fabrics you'll need to buy an eighth yard of each ***if you are using fabrics from your own stash, smaller amounts will do --The patchwork on the Princess and the Pea Pillow is made up of 4"x4" squares --the patchwork for the carriage and castle pillows is made up of 3"x3" squares. --Each pillow uses 25-28 squares and each fabric can be used 2-4 times per pillow. --3 pillow forms (one 22" and two 18") or synthetic fiberfill ***pillow forms can very widely in how full they arethe finished size of these pillows are two pillows at 17.5" square and one pillow at 21.5" square. Use you own judgment when buying pillow forms. -embroidery floss-I used olive green and mustard yellow, blue for eyes and pink for mouth --one 12" strip of "vintage inspired" cotton lace for one of the blankets on the bed (optional) --one 12" strip of "vintage inspired" braid trim for the bedding (optional) --buttons: -one green button (approx. 1/2") for the pea-in the Princess and the Pea bed -two buttons (approx. 1/2") for the center of the spokes on the carriage wheel -one decorative button (approx. 1" - 1 1/4") for the top of the carriage -one button (1/4" to 3/8") for the door knob on the carriage

I've sewn all my life. I sew a lot. I love to sew. I'm obsessed with fabric. Becoming a Gammy (grandma) sparked my enthusiasm for all things small-which led to a lot of sewing for babies and kids and ultimately pattern design. It's been a fun journey!
