String Quilt (using phone book pages)

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I managed to make a dent in my stash, and I pieced leftover batting. I didn't spend any extra money making this king-sized quilt. I quilted it on my domestic machine. What advice would you give someone starting this project? It's very doable, but takes a little patience.

What you will need

  • Scraps from stash
  • recycled phone book pages for foundations for making blocks

Q&A with quilter3681

Ranjini asked:
The quilt speaks for you being a very patient person!!I can only imagine how long you took to make it.Do you know how long it took you?(or I assume like the Amish say " many, many hours.")I love how bright and beautiful it is!!!!!
quilter3681 answered:
I don't actually remember, but it wasn't a slow process at all. It was one of the faster quilts I've made. You don't have to measure or accurately cut the pieces you are sewing to the phone book pages, and you just trim each block up to size. I did use graph paper to decide what color the center strips in each block would be so that I could have those consistent as they went around the center. It was one of the easier quilts I've ever made.
Pepper Cory asked:
I love this quilt! How great that you shared the picture with us! This one's made my day.
quilter3681 answered:
I'm glad you like it. I thought it was so wild that nobody would use it except under another quilt, or in the dark, but the friend who adopted it loves the bright colors and uses it on top!
Pat Sloan asked:
what a fun setting!!!
quilter3681 answered:
Thanks, Pat! I try to catch all your "radio" shows.
KatherineElaine asked:
My mother taught me how to make this quilt 40 years ago but I never got past the first square. She told me to soak the piece in water to remove the paper. Do you have a better method? I am now inspired to try this again.
quilter3681 answered:
I found it very easy to just pull the paper strips off while I was watching TV or listening to an audiobook. Like Pepper says in the lessons, I used an OLD phone book. The pages were thin and brittle. I tore off very, very easily and no water was necessary.
