My 1st BOM 2012 considering layout

Project Description

What are you most proud of? Finishing all 20 blocks! Although I have substituted a couple of blocks I sewed all 20 patterns. This picture is for layout only. I have gone back and changed the red fabric in a few blocks for a more consistent look. I am considering using the same red for sashing and a black/red print in a border. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Be open minded about all the blocks even if you don't like them at first. Be creative! You can always alter them and sew your own variation. Choose a background color up front. Take a photo of your layout and sleep on it to help decide how you want your finished quilt to look. At this point I'm still deciding. This picture is a compilation of photos taken over time in different lighting and with different cameras. I'm going to try and take a picture of all the blocks themselves and add to this project.

Q&A with NanaJeanFL

NanaJeanFL asked:
This mosaic is just for layout. The photos and poor. They were taken by different cameras in various locations and lighting. AlsoI have redone a few blocks using the most prominent red fabric to pull things more together and may post another picture. I'm thinking I'll do the sashing in the prominent red and a border using a black/red print I like. Its the fabric in the center of the Double Star. Please feel free to let me know what you think of the layout and any changes you'd like me to consider. TIA BOM friends!

I ended up deciding to do a lap quilt with my 1st colorway. Could not make the new fabrics work with the FQ I started with... It's posted as a separately. You should be able to find it in my projects.
mpac5000 asked:
Jean, because of the blocks that have a different red, how about sashing in a black tone on tone or even solid black or a black and white print. My eye kept going to the fabric in the center of the last block on the right in the second row. I took all of my blocks to the local fabric store and laid them on the fabrics I was considering. It was fun and many others got in on the discussion. LOL! You know how quilters are..
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks mpac! I've resewn all but the Octagon block (top left corner) with the same red fabric. I have a nice tone on tone black I used in the Chevron to consider. The B,W,R print in the center of the Ohio Star might be worth trying out. I've already been tossing the right hand bottom corner around. This mosaic doesn't show that I've turned the Hexi Strip block. I'll have to watch out for my perfectionism and be happy at some point but I've already had some more ideas this afternoon. Thanks so much for your feedback. I really appreciate it!

I moved mine around so that the heavier blocks were disperses. I put four heavy ones in the corners and then just randomly put my other squares for my blue quilt. I am working on my brown quilt now and I put heavy blocks in the corners and in the 3rd squares down on the outside. It seemed to balance my quilt. But .... what I love about this is that it's scrappy and whimsical so we can put the blocks any place we choose! I love, love, love these colors you chose!
NanaJeanFL answered:
Thanks! Glad you like the colors. B,W&R is one of my favorite combos. I just love your blue quilt - especially that border. Look forward to seeing the brown one sashed and ready to quilt!
