Magic Squares 2

Project Description

What advice would you give someone starting this project? The method of cutting /sewing is the same as I used for the previous quilt: in this case the strips were 2 1/4" wide (I only had a 9" piece to cut from and needed 4 strips of each). I grouped the strips into three piles (all the strips in the piles came from the same 4 fabrics. I decided on an order for the strips and sewed 4 panels of 4 strips from each pile. The strip width was 7 1/2". I cut blocks 7 1/2" in length, arranged them in pairs, right sides together, with the stripes aligned at 90* angles, stitched around the outside of the block, cut along the diagonals, reassembled the pieces with solid triangles at the centre to make 9 1/2" blocks for the quilt. Sewed the blocks into 4 rows of 6 blocks, joined the rows. I used leftover bits from the strip panels to form the 2 1/2" border (I had to add four strips of a complementary fabric to have enough 2 1/2" pieces for the border. Also added a contrast sash to bring out the brown tones in the fabrics. I quilted in the hoop using a design I created to fill the blocks.

What you will need
