Hourglass Handbag

Project Description

What are you most proud of? The straps! I love the grommets and the way the buttons keep the straps in place. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Use fusible web on the wrong side of the applique fabric (the darker tan fabric) because a handbag gets a lot of wear and tear. The permanent fusing will hold the appliques in place.

What you will need

  • Upholstery fabric and batting

Q&A with Eileen Roche

BabsK asked:
What a lovely handbag! I like the design, the embroidery and the colors. Nice!
Eileen Roche answered:
Thank you! I had a blast making this bag.
mrsrabbit asked:
What a great idea for you design. I would never of thought to use it for a purse. Clever. I am just about finished with our quilt project. On the binding video I did not see any reference to how find the binding strip is. I assume it is 2". If not please let me know. I can't wait to finish up. Then I promise I will post a picture. I have learned a lot and loving every minute of it. Thanks Eileen.
Eileen Roche answered:
You're so welcome! I love teaching on Craftsy - great way to connect with other passionate embroiderers! On the binding, i usually cut my binding 2 1/2" wide but that's just a matter of personal preference.
mrsrabbit asked:
Correction on the reply question. How wide is the binding strip?
Eileen Roche answered:
Cut the binding 2 1/2" wide.
Cajun Lady asked:
what is the length of your strips?
Eileen Roche answered:
The straps are 24" long, perfect for my short frame.
maggiesc asked:
Amazing bag, what is that beautiful fabric
Eileen Roche answered:
It's just two different upholstery weight fabrics - one tan and the other taupe. Thanks for your kind comment.
