Girl with the Pearl Earring

Project Description

What are you most proud of? I'm most pleased with the pearl earring, her left eye, the shading on her face and getting it finished!. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Don't try anything too small if you want to include a reasonable amount of detail. I reduced the picture to 6.5" x 8.5" overall to fit my scrap of fabric, so the face is very small (2" x 1.5") and it doesn't give a lot of room for manoeuvre on details like the eyes. The fabric medium does change the colour and texture and left her with frown lines and wrinkles, so I tried trapuntoing her face with limited results. The detail and unframed pictures were shot before using the medium. I had to put her behind glass to try to smooth her skin out!

What you will need

  • Scrap cotton fabric
  • Inktense pencils

Q&A with mamgusian

Eklectika Ann asked:
I think she's stunning. May I inquire.....what was original color of cotton fabric? Also, was it your creation as to the obtuse triangles and squares you used to frame the pentagon? Love the colors and the varying sizes and the varying quilting stitch widths. Simple lines that add so much movement to your finished piece. ***smiles***
mamgusian answered:
Hi! The fabric is a pale beige cotto, with a silky smooth smooth weav, thicker than the average cotton you'd use for quilts. I'm afraid I'm not sure what you'd call it. I couldn't think what to do for the wall so I just placed a ruler through each point of the pentagon across to the centre of the opposite side, then drew the lines that fell outside the window. That gave me the shapes to fill in, and I didn't want it to compete with the girl, so I thought something really simple - and quick and easy : - hence the echoing. The colours are picked from her clothes. I'm so glad you like it.

Greetings & thanks for the additional info. Because I'm new at all this quilting jazz . . . the more details and info the better so I can learn and discern about what's what. Seriously ~ your piece is QUITE good in my view. My eye is usually attracted to great art and what you've done is fantastic - especially at being on such a small scale. Pat yourself on the back. Glad I've inspired you to return to creating! Saw your comment on the other post. Toodles & my best to your future creations. ***smiles***

Cheers E! It's wonderful to get encouragement. I look forward to seeing your projects. NB remember, much of the time what you think is a mistake is just an unscheduled design opportunity. - saves a lot of unpicking :)
