Fan Block

Project Description

What are you most proud of? It actually lies flat (more or less). What advice would you give someone starting this project? If you're going to machine embroider, use the same thread for the bobbin. I was too lazy to wind a new bobbin, and the grey bobbin thread shows on the top.

What you will need

  • Fabric purchased on eBay
  • Mettler purple cotton thread for machine applique

Q&A with Purple Cat

Judy Walker asked:
I like your fussy cut flower center.
Purple Cat answered:
Thank you. I wasn't sure if I liked it at first as it really stands out from the green background, but it's "growing on me."
Nanas Quilts asked:
Was nice to see someone else was thinking along the same lines as myself. I too was thinking all different colors for the fan. Looks nice.
Purple Cat answered:
I had bought a fat quarter bundle on eBay of 40 different green fabrics, so I figured I might as well go this route.
Quirkyone asked:
This one really caught my eye. It's so very PRETTY!

francesca1951 asked:
What is fussy cut and are the appliqus done o ER the pieced fans? Sorta newer to some verbiage. What is BOM lol I think I know duhhh:))) Thx Francesca
Purple Cat answered:
No problem, Francesca. Fussy cut is just when you have a "picture" (such as a flower, animal, scenery) in your fabric that you want to isolate and use just that part in your quilt block. In this particular block, the flower in the centre was my "fussy cut.' It came from a fabric that has a large floral pattern that wouldn't work well for any of the smaller pieces.
weaverbird asked:
If your bobbin thread shows on top, try altering the tensions, that may help.
Purple Cat answered:
Thanks for the advice. I'll keep that in mind for next time.
