Q&A with JudyJoy

Merrypal asked:
ambitious. Best of luck with your project.
JudyJoy answered:
I'm a stained glass artist, Merrypal, so I'm used to putting patterns together.
Surfside6 asked:
WOW - that's a lot of work. Computerized look at the colors has to be helpful to you. Looks like it's a winner! Will be fun to see if you make any changes as you go. Curious if you have all your specific fabric picked out.
JudyJoy answered:
Fabric is already purchased. Kona will cover most of the colors. They didn't have the right turquoise for the small border. I did find a very cool spotted print in bold black and turquoise (or aqua) in just the shade I was looking for.
lmFNP asked:
very nice. Would love to know how to use that software. Wonder how many blocks for a generous queen size?
JudyJoy answered:
You input the size of the quilt, add borders (adjust those as you like), and the software does all of that figuring for you. I use a similar program when designing stained glass for my business. Have for years, and love seeing pretty much just how the project will look when complete. I've found it to be well worth the investment in just this first project, alone. It's so fun and easy to create, set and tweak each block. Once the block is set into the quilt design, you can change any or all of the piecing colors. I find this invaluable in balancing the design.
JudyJoy asked:
I was browsing on Amazon and came across this book titled, "Stained Glass Quilts." I was surprised at how much this looks like the quilt I designed myself, block by block. Even the sashing between the blocks have the same contrasting square between them like mine. Interesting. When I first took up sewing, I felt like it was so similar to stained glass work in the way one prepares a pattern, selects color, and pieces the project. Go to this link to see the book cover. Weird resemblance, huh? http://www.amazon.com/Foundation-Pieced-Stained-Glass-Quilts/dp/1891497022/ref=sr_1_45?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1358329068&sr=1-45&keywords=paper+piecing+quilt+books
JudyJoy answered:
Or just go to amazon.com and type "Foundation Pieced Stained Glass Quilts" in the search box.
NanaJeanFL asked:
HI JudyJoy - OK, honest feedback :D - This looks like it will be one humongous quilt. I don't know anything about the software you used but I wonder if the extra width and length that come from adding sashing and borders is accounted for. You may want to double check the overall finished size. That said I think this will be one spectacular quilt! And I'm not an expert (still pretty much and newbie) :D
JudyJoy answered:
It is a king size to cover the top of my California King water bed. Thanks for your input. I'm on my iPad now, but when I sign onto my laptop, I'll double check JUST to be sure. I believe it's okay, though, because the way you build a quilt in EQ7, it accounts for all borders and sashing in the design. Off the top of my head, I recall it is something like 110" x 90".
