Birthday cushion

What are you most proud of? The fact that it is my first attempt at appliqué and most of the stitching was done with my 20-month-old son sitting on my lap. What advice would you give someone starting this project? I would suggest choosing a small-scale print or near-solid instead of a solid for the background as this may help to hide the piecing lines between the background squares.
