Here's a cheery little wall hanging to brighten even the rainiest day. Fabric possibilities are endless, so make this one your own and bring on the rain. You won't get wet under these gay umbrellas! This design is an adaptation of a 1950s baby quilt--simplified for easier piecing and assembled in a sashed setting that joins blocks into groups of four and then sashed again to join the 4-block units. The wall hanging size is perfect for a baby's room. This design would also make a wonderful bed quilt. Since it's scrappy and it's built in four-block units, it's easy to increase the size. Yardage and directions are included for lap, twin, double/queen, and king-size quilts. This quilt features pieced blocks (not applique). If you've never attempted curved piecing, this is an easy way to learn and perfect your skills. Extensive directions with clear illustrations guide the way to perfect blocks. "Pretty Parasols" is a "planned scrappy" quilt. There isn't a duplicate block in it, but if you look closely, you'll see that some parasols are print with a solid band and others are the reverse. If you have a healthy fabric stash or a great collection of scraps or pre-cuts, you might not need to buy fabric for the parasols. Each one requires only a 6" x 8" or smaller scrap. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Basic quilting and sewing skills SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Wall Hanging: 40-1/'2" square Directions also included for lap, twin, double/queen, & king sizes.

I am a published sewing and quilting author with several books and many magazine articles to my credit. My most recent book, How to Make a Quilt was published in August 2014 by Storey Publishing. I've written two other successful books for them-- The Quilting Answer Book and The Sewing Answer Book. I learned to sew from my great grandmother, two grandmothers, and my Mom when I was barely in grade school and I've been sewing ever since. I added quilting to my repertoire in the 1980s and worked for a major quilt book publisher as Managing Editor and then Editor-in-Chief for 5 years. Now I have my own business, designing quilts and tote bags and anything else that strikes my fancy. Go to to see my projects and whatever else I'm up to. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you find something you'd like to make in my Craftsy store!
