The French Braid Pattern has been used for many years in various forms from floors to quilts but under different names. You can find wooden floors in many European homes over a hundred years old with this pattern The term French Braid was coined by Jane Miller though. I love French Braid designs. So many people are afraid of the design because they are uncomfortable when picking out all the fabrics necessary for a French Braid quilt.. I decided to make one using a Layer Cake(r). Moda has done all the work for you in a Layer Cake(r). A more traditional fabric line works best with this pattern though because the more contemporary lines tend to be too busy. The Layer Cake (r) needs to have three basic color pallets and a good combination of light, medium, and dark colors in each color way to complete the quilt as shown. This quilt goes together quickly and you will have a beautiful quilt to be proud of when done. Layer Cake(r) is a registered trademark of Moda Fabrics BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Quilting Expenience SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 52" x 72"

Recommended with this pattern

  • 1/2 yard for set-in triangles
  • 1 1/4 yards for inner border, contrast squares, and binding
  • 1 yard outside border

Thanks! ___________________________________________ Welcome to Pure Joy Patterns (Pure Joy Designs). My name is Sharon McCurdy. I have been creating patterns for a long time, though not as a business. Years ago, I would make clothing using my own designs. Back in those days, I did a lot of machine appliqué, which I still love today. But when I was introduced to quilting, my world changed. I found myself creating patterns and samples for the quilt shop where I was working. That’s when my love of designing and writing (I wrote software manuals as a technical writer), finally came together…and the rest, I guess you could say, is history. Everyone always asks where I came up with the name “Pure Joy Designs”. Well, my mother's name was Joye. Years ago, my sister and her husband (owners of Wire Works Custom Jewelry) made Mom a necklace that read “100% Pure Joye”. I always loved the necklace and decided to use the concept as my company name. Additionally, Pure Joy is a daily reminder of Mom, who passed away in 2007. Wholesale inquires welcome.
