What advice would you give someone starting this project? The pattern says to cut the elastic 14 inches. That would have put it around my shoulders. I ended up cutting my elastic to 10 inches which fit perfect for my small head. My husband was able to wear it too (to sample the size) and it fit just a touch snug on him. He said it would need another inch to be comfortable on his head. It is suggested to use dark materials for the mask to block out the light. I wanted to use lighter coloured fabric so I sandwiched a layer of matching fleece in the middle to thicken it up and block the light. The fleece worked perfect. This would make a great gift for expectant or new mothers or for people who work the night shift and sleep during the day. I made these using scrapes of wool and a t shirt. I added a crocheted strap.

I make my own sleep masks myself after buying them for years. I use two pieces of elastic and I put a piece of blackout fabric inside the mask across where my eyes are. I also use batting to make them soft. I work at night and have for 18 years. Sleeping during daylight hours is my norm and I am addicted to sleeping masks!
