Share a little about the materials, processes and techniques used to create this cake: I think I watched Mike's video 3 times before making this cake and during it too! The only things I did differently were: I used Swiss meringue Buttercream, I did a 50/50 mix of modelling chocolate and fondant for the front fenders and it worked perfectly, I stuck toothpicks into each of the individual hood ornament components for extra stability.

What advice would you give someone starting this project? Watch this video in its entirety before starting. Make as much of the extra decor ahead of time! And plan, plan, plan!

It came out absolutely awesome! I like to work with Swiss Buttercream too, did you have problems with it being too soft and moist?

Thank you! I did find the SMBC to be quite soft, but it's the type of buttercream that I have become the most comfortable with. I would like to try Mike's recipe though, it seemed really different from cooked buttercreams so I will definitely have to give it a try next time. After my final crumb coat I let it firm up a little in the fridge before covering in fondant and continuing to decorate it. I think by the time I got it to the party, it had been at room temperature for almost 15-18 hours. I think the next time I do a carved cake I will do my final crumb coat and freeze the cake for a few hours so it's totally solid. I just think it will make it easier to handle. And while it will still come to room temperature it will be a little more gradual.

It's so much easier than you think it is. The biggest thing is that it's extremely time consuming.

I tried to make as many pieces ahead of time as I could. I made all of the hood ornament pieces and wheels ahead of time.
