Pattern Details

The Westport Blanket is knit with super bulky weight yarn so it is quick to knit on big needles. Knit flat, in one piece, back and forth on US size 13 circular knitting needles. This pattern uses standard U.S. knitting terms. Written pattern with row by row instructions. DIRECTIONS FOR FIVE SIZES: Approximate sizes after blocking… XL: 48.5” wide x 49” long Large: 42.75” wide x 43” long Medium: 39.75” wide x 40” long Small (Crib/Lap): 37” wide x 37” long Baby: 31.25” wide x 31” long Any of the blanket sizes may be made longer by adding pattern repeats. Each pattern repeat adds about 3” to the length of the blanket. Pattern includes estimates for additional yardage needed to make blankets longer. SKILL LEVEL: Easy You will need to know how to cast on stitches, knit and purl confidently, read a row by row knitting pattern, bind off stitches and weave in ends. Blocking of finished knitting is recommended. SUPER BULKY YARN: XL: 1150 - 1220 yards Large: 860 - 920 yards Medium: 750 - 810 yards Small (Crib/Lap): 630 - 660 yards Baby: 450 - 475 yards Be sure to buy additional yarn if you plan to add length to your blanket. This pattern will work well with many super bulky weight yarns. I used Lion Brand Hometown USA in the color “Dallas Grey” for the blanket shown in the photos. This is a great yarn at a very economical price. It is very soft and knits up easily. I also like Lion Brand Thick & Quick Solids. You may also experiment with knitting two strands of bulky or worsted weight yarn together…remember you will need about twice as much yardage! The texture of the pattern will show up best with solid color yarns. GAUGE: Garter stitch with US size 13 needles: approximately 8.5 stitches & 14 - 15 rows = 4” This blanket is very stretchy so measuring gauge can be tricky…depending on how much the blanket is stretched. Exact gauge is not essential. However, a significantly looser gauge will require more yarn. NEEDLES: In order to accommodate the large number of stitches, long circular needles are highly recommended. I use US size 13 circular knitting needles 38” in length for larger blankets. For a crib or baby blanket, circular needles in a shorter length could be used. WESTPORT BLANKET: The name and design for the Westport Blanket is inspired by the old brick buildings that line the streets in the oldest neighborhood in Kansas City…my hometown. You can read more about the pattern and its name on by blog.

I have been knitting since I was about 8 years old. My mother taught me to knit and my parents encouraged me to explore all kinds of arts & crafts activities by providing me with the materials that I needed to create. As a girl, I loved to sew (I spent hours using my mother’s sewing machine making clothes for my dolls), knit, draw and paint. In high school I spent all my extra time at school hanging out in the art room. In college I worked at a cute little yarn shop. I love giving hand knit gifts to my friends and family. I love to see the smile on their faces when they open the gift I made for them. I hope that you enjoy using my patterns to create special heirloom quality items for your home, friends & family.
