This is the fourth of my series of hats exploring the potential of the welt stitch. In this case, the welt is turned on it's side as the hat is worked sideways, flat, with short rows. A little bit of contrast stitching gives an otherwise subtle hat a little pop of pizazz! BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit purl short rows provisional cast on grafting welt stitch GAUGE 23 st and 30 rows in 4 inches in stockinette. Row gauge is more important. SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Fits ~ 21-22" head

  • Sport weight yarn, 100g/225 yards (Louet Gems Sport in Linen Gray)
  • Scrap of contrast yarn (Malabrigo Merino Worsted in Frank Ochre)
  • US size 5 needles- either 16" or 24" circulars, or a long straight (You will be working flat)

I'm Alex Tinsey and I design stuff! I like simple textures and interesting shapes. I like soft wools and kettle-dyes. I like ice cream. Addis. Hats. Spinning. Ducklings. And I like you too, sugar cheeks. I can?t say I care for bio-writing, though. Boring stuff: I graduated with a degree in psychology (still in mint condition!) from Reed College, after dinking around at the Pacific Northwest College of Art and Kenyon College for a while. I've been knitting since about 2004, designing since about 2006. I was making up my very own garter stitch squares and randomly-decreased hats before that, but I won't count it. I've had patterns published in Knitty, Knit Simple, the Knit Picks Independent Designer Program, and Interweave Knits, though I generally go the self-publishing route.
