The Stansbury Mountains lie south of the Great Salt Lake but are mostly overlooked by Salt Lakers because they can't really be seen over the Oquirrhs. The mountain range is named for Howard Stansbury who was a major in the Army Corps of Topographical Engineers and led a two-year expedition in 1849 to survey the Great Salt Lake. With high peaks (the highest over 11,000 feet), a great network of hiking trails and a mix of coniferous and deciduous trees it is a diverse and beautiful place to spend a chilly autumn day. I live and work in Salt Lake City yet I am woefully ignorant about the Great Salt Lake. I am attempting to learn more about the lake that has recently inspired me…and to knit that inspiration. I hope you like the patterns I am creating.
