As radio waves bounce off the ionosphere and return to Earth, a skywave layer envelopes the planet. Skywave requires approximately 400 meters of fingering weight yarn. The shawl can be enlarged by adding additional repeats. Use needle size that gives you a nice lacy effect. You may find a cable needle and stitch markers useful. Purple shawl used 2 skeins Malabrigo Sock in Eggplant 100% Merino, 440 yd/402 m per 100g on 4 mm (US 6) needles. Blocked size is 130 x 42 cm (51 x 16 inches). Gauge 18 stitches = 10 cm in stockinette. Pink shawl used 1 skein Madelinetosh Tosh Merino Light in Fragrant 100% merino, 420 yd/384 m per 100g on 4 mm (US 6) needles.
