Story of this hat A boy had seen a comic figure with such a "cool" beanie on his head and he liked it for christmas 2012. A friend of him and work collegue of me asked me if I could knit such a beanie. So the sock yarn version with 3.5 mm needles one was done. As he was freezing with the sock yarn version and liked a thicker one for skiing I knit another one in bulkier yarn Lana Grossa Bingo with 5.00 mm needles. The second one also became a bit larger and longer. My friend told me he is now walking around indoors and outdoors with the beanies and is the happiest boy on earth now. :-) You can vary it in lengh by knitting the stripes longer or shorter... The beanie is one size and will fit head circumreference 57 - 60 cm. The boy has a head circumreference of 58 cm. But it even fit me and I have a relatively small head as the ribbing keeps the beanie from slipping over your eyes. Gauge is not that important. So I left it blank. I testknitted both versions. Took me three evenings to knit the bulky one. As my work collegue and the boy were so happy about this special christmas beanie you can buy nowhere, I'd like to give this pattern also free to you as an early christmas present. So you also have the time to still make someone happy with it as christmas present. You can choose between the two versions: indoor (or summer Jamaica beanie) in 4-ply sock yarn or bulky warm outdoor beanie in Lana Grossa Bingo or similar yarn weight. Both versions have the lovely swirl-like decrease at the top that you can see in the last picture. Enjoy and happy knitting! GAUGE not that important SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS Adjustable. Depends on how long you make the stripes. SUGGESTED YARN 230 yards of Fingering weight

Recommended with this pattern

  • circular needle size 3.5 mm for the indoor version and a set of double pointed needles size 3.00 mm for the top of the hat
  • circular needle size 5.0 mm for the outdoor version and a set of double pointed needles size 4.5
  • indoor version: 4-ply sock yarn in red, yellow and green about 30 - 40 g of each color (depending on hat length)

I'm a hobby pattern creator and love knitting and creating Fair Isle patterns. I wish you as much fun knitting and wearing them as I have designing them! If you like my patterns checkout my patterns at or Ravelry. You can either search for stoperror or find me under the designers as Sandra Jaeger. Please note: Due to the VAT-tax changes taking effect on January 1 2015 I had to delete my on sale Patterns on Craftsy as there is no way to handle the new tax Regulation affecting European buyers via Craftsy. Ravelry tries to come up with a solution. If you are from not EU-based countries or from Germany you can still buy my on sale Patterns as usual via Ravelry. If you are from a European (not Germany) Country unfortunately there is no solution how to handle it at the Moment. Ravelry tries to come up with a solution in the next 6 months. Until then my sales are limited to non EU users and Germany. I'm very sorry for that, but the new rule is very complicated. Jippie we got ourself a Ravelry group: The knitting chartists where you can make pattern requests and take part in our pattern development. T-Shirts gibt's von mir auch bei spreadshirt. News 2016: I can now republish priced standalone Charts that were available at Craftsy on Loveknitting. If you are missing one, please let me know via and I will offer it there and send you an update.
