H?naki (Hee-narki) is the New Zealand M?ori word for a type of eel net. The stitch pattern and shape of this cowl reminded me of this ancient net design which is still used today. This cowl is a fast knit, taking a couple of hours of concentrated knitting, and with it's simple 2 round repeat you can take it anywhere. Wearing it is a breeze, it slips over the head easily and the spiral stitch pattern collapses into a squishy pile of cosy ripples. Experiment with different yarns and stitch numbers to make a longer or wider cowl (details in the pattern). BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY knit purl cast on bind off work from a chart (stitch pattern is charted AND written out) GAUGE 13.5 stitches = 10cm (4") SUGGESTED YARN 108 yards of Chunky weight PREFERRED BRAND/YARN Misti Alpaca Handpaint Chunky

I love designing knitwear for babies and older kids too, I'm inspired by the world around me, whether it's the green bush covered hills where I live, or the bright city lights and sparkling harbor. I try to find a way to incorporate traditional, modern and whimsical elements into every garment I design. Children need to be comfortable and relaxed in their clothing, they need the opportunity to jump and run and paint without restriction. I try to design with these qualities in mind.
