Forbidden Flowers is a beautiful lace shawl that can be draped over the shoulders, or worn around the neck as a scarf. An interesting choice for a bridal shawl as well, as it straddles the line between traditional and modern.... The design reflects my interest in art Nouveau notifs and Estonian knitting techniques, especially the 3-to-7 increases. These increases are very interesting to work, and not hard at all, but require some attention. The pattern consists of a combination of written instructions and charts and is best suited for the intermediate and/or advanced lace knitter. There are also photo tutorials and links to video tutorials for those are more visual learners. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY This pattern makes use of a wide variety of increases and decreases to achieve the lace design, so it is best suited to someone who has some experience with lace knitting, and particularly knitting from charts GAUGE Gauge will vary with every knitter. I used a size 6 needle for fingering weight yarn, but I am a very loose knitter. You may want to size up to a size 7 if you are a tight knitter. I find that a lot of 'throwers' will knit tighter than knitters that use the Continental method, which is what I use. This design will also need to be blocked fairly aggressively to open up the lace, so keep that in mind when you are selecting a yarn and needle size. PREFERRED BRAND/YARN Cephalopod Yarn - Skinny Bugga

Recommended with this pattern

  • 380-420 yards of fingering weight yarn, size 6 or 7 needle
  • blocking wires, mats, and pins.
