Pattern Details

These strong elegant links are particularly useful for showcasing unusual or particularly attractive large beads such as lampwork beads, felt beads or gemstone nuggets. Although based on the open spiral technique, the use of a mandrel as the base ensures that the links are consistent in size. As usual, it is important that links should be strong and the wire gauge suggested here is ideal for beginners but it's the minimum size that should be used. I also recommend the use of 1/2 hard wire to avoid distortion. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY Make a loop Form wire on a mandrel

Recommended with this pattern

  • Per link 8cm 0.8mm/3" 20 gauge half hard wire
  • Round nose pliers
  • Flat nose pliers

My passion for jewellery designing and making started 12 years ago with a silversmithing course and I have since embraced other techniques such as stringing, bead weaving, chain maille, resin but my true love is wirework in which I now specialize. I have contributed a monthly project to Beads & Beyond for the past 3 years, written numerous tutorials which I sell on my website and I am the author of The Absolute Beginner's Guide: Making Wire Jewellery (published by Kalmbach books) which teaches you in great detail all the basic techniques you need to become proficient at wirework. Don't forget to download my free tutorial about the basic tools you need to get started in wirework.
