Mauna Kea is begins with the crochet brim, worked from side to side, fastened off, then seamed into a ring. The rise of the hat is worked along the side edge of the brim, back and forth, joining the end of the round to the beginning, then turning. One decrease round is worked toward the crown of the hat, then stitches are gathered to join at the top. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY chain double crochet half double crochet single crochet slip stitch seaming (to sew the band into a ring) GAUGE 15 sts and 9 rows = 4" [10 cm] in hdc-tbl with smaller hook; 5 ch-1 sps = 41⁄2" [11.5 cm] and 9 rows = 4" [10 cm] in Rise pattern with larger hook.
