I wrote this pattern after my younger brother asked me to make him a bearded beanie. I had no idea what he was talking about, and I went searching online. I only found one available pattern at the time, and it was a knitting pattern for a one piece toque with something that resembled a beard covering the face. So, I decided to try to make my own using a spike stitch I had learned before. It took quite a bit of tweaking. The very first one I ever made had an enormous beard that had to be scaled down very much. I did end up getting it how I wanted it, though, and this pattern is the result. This pattern is an advanced beginner to intermediate pattern. I do not recommend it as a good first time crochet pattern as there are some stitches that have been confusing to even experienced crocheters. Also, I do not offer this pattern as a knit pattern. I have written the pattern under the assumption that the user is already very familiar and comfortable with reading a standard crochet pattern and understanding the crochet terminology. There are directions for teen to small adult as well as large/extra large, and there are directions for both a solid colored hat and a striped hat.
