Project

Birches

Project Description

What are you most proud of? That I made it work - that I captured the scene in fabric. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Start with something simpler and smaller, look for the right fabrics because they don't come around often. I really recommend buying at least 1/4 yard pieces of lots of different landscape fabrics. This way you have them available when the inspiration hits.

What you will need

  • Cotton fabrics
  • dye markers
  • oil pastels
  • acrylic paints.

Q&A with Cathy Geier

Northwoods Pat asked:
Beautiful! I wish we could get a really zoomed in look at some parts of the quilt. I can see the piecing for some of the background. How did you do the birch trees themselves? Did you paint the bark detail on a more neutral fabric?
Cathy Geier answered:
If you go to my website - cathygeier.com, or patchworksthatpraise.com (I am both, lol) and click on the Tips/Help link that you see on the left, then scroll down and you'll see a closeup. The background is pieced, using roughly 3 fabrics. I appliqued the larger birch trunks and used dye markers and pastels to color them. Actually, if you go here - my facebook page - and click on Photos, you can find something called a Mini Tutorial. Scroll through the pictures and you can see how I make birch trunks. Thanks for the compliments by the way!
Lisa Wood asked:
I am not a quilter but i have to say that this is stunning. Your color choices, composition and attention to detail are absolutely wonderful. I have looked at your website and can see that you are an extremely talented quilter.
Cathy Geier answered:
Thank you. :)
Karen Louise asked:
I love landscape quilting and this is absolutely amazing.
Cathy Geier answered:
Thanks, I love landscape quilting too. As if you couldn't tell. I wrote a book and then opened an online store which specializes in fabrics for landscape quilting. Plus on facebook I've added free pictorials - with how to pictures to help others get into this type of quilting. My full gallery of quilts is at my site. (cathygeier.com). Thanks for the compliments this morning. :)
StasaLynn asked:
Beautiful! I will have to go to your facebook page! Thanks for kickstart I needed!
Cathy Geier answered:
There should be some things there to make you happy. :)
pkb1313 asked:
I so admire this quilt. Did you piece the background with strips or squares? Also, what are the dementions of this quilt?
Cathy Geier answered:
It is pieced with 2.25 inch squares and it measures 45 x 28 inches. Thanks for the compliments. :)
