My husband asked if and how quickly I could knit a hat for someone experiencing hair loss. I wanted to consider only soft yarns and something nearly seamless. I also wanted to design an attractive hat, not simply a ski cap! I designed this hat to have some ease around the main section giving it a slight beret effect. The hat band is knitted in rows using the Garter Stitch, which when turned on its side makes it quite stretchy but will not allow it to slip around or off the person's head. Only the knit stitch is used throughout this hat (no purling), but as you can see, the brim and the main section appear quite different! My suggestion for yarn is Caron's Simply Soft 100% acrylic yarn, which can be found at most craft or sewing stores. It is extremelly easy to work with especially for a beginning knitter. It is also machine washable and dryable. If you want to make this hat smaller for a child, use smaller needles but follow the same instuctions. The main body of the hat can be adjusted for less depth (or more if desired). This is a very portable and easy beginning project for someone who knows how to do the knit stitch and is looking for just a slight challenge. The hat can be made in a day! Happy knitting! I have been knitting for 60 years and since the grandchildren arrived have been knitting daily. I decided I wanted to create easy predominantly seamless knitting projects because I love knitting in the round, and more important I hate to sew pieces together! I have had many wonderful comments from knitters who have created items from my patterns and like their finished projects, but should you come across a flaw or something that doesn't seem quite right in the instructions, I hope you will contact me!
