These stretchy handwarmers are an excellent use for a single skein or an extra 2oz. of worsted-weight yarn. The construction is simply a cylinder with a small split. The stitch pattern was designed using a tiny bit of mathematics so the knitter would only need to memorize a 12-stitch sequence, but the pattern repeats every three rounds. BASIC SKILLS NECESSARY just knit, purl, and twisted stitch (for most people, knit through the back loop). Uses Jeny's Super-Stretchy Bind-Off, for which there is an online tutorial. GAUGE 5 stitches to the inch in stockinette stitch SIZING / FINISHED MEASUREMENTS 6" circumference (unstretched), 7.25" length. It is easy to modify the length of these mitts and less easy to modify their circumference.

Supplies Needed

 • 120 yards of worsted-weight yarn
 • US 6 needles (4.0 mm), one long circular, two circulars, or a set of double-pointed needles
 • One (locking) stitch marker.

I'm a math professor by trade, and (unsurprisingly) my designs are informed by mathematical concepts. I co-edited the books Making Mathematics with Needlework: Ten Papers and Ten Projects and Crafting by Concepts: Fiber Arts and Mathematics with my colleague and friend Carolyn Yackel.
