Pirate Ship Cake

Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake Black Forest Cake Recipe/ Styrofoam Ship Base/ Rice Crispy Treats/ Homemade Buttercream/ Dowel Rods/ Wilton Rolled Fondant/ Wilton Gumpaste What are you most proud of? All of it! There is a thin styrofoam base (the depth of the water), but the rest of the ship is cake. The prow and masts are dowel rods covered in gum paste, and the sails are gum paste as well. I cut the fondant into long strips and stacked them on the sides to achieve the wooden plank look. The outer border of the water is rice crispy treats stacked and covered in fondant. I hand cut the Jolly Roger emblem out of fondant and placed in on the black flag, which is made out of gum paste. All in all it was a huge project, but I loved every minute of it. :) What advice would you give someone starting this project? Make sure you have a good strong base, because this is a very heavy cake. I used a thick piece of ply wood, then hot-glued cake board to it to make it food-safe. Give yourself plenty of time to let the gumpaste dry completely. Be patient and have fun with it. The little details get meticulous, but it's all worth it in the end. There was several other things I wanted to do with this cake, but just ran out of time.
