80th 'ang pow' birthday cake

Project Description

Share a little about the materials, processes, and techniques used to create this cake Modelling chocolate, fondant, silicone onlay What are you most proud of? It may not be the cleanest finish (not by a long shot) but overall it looks quite striking. What advice would you give someone starting this project? Marina rolls over the silicon sheet with quite a large sweep - I found it easier to make very small gentle rolling motions, as the large sweeps tended to lift the fondant. The gentle rolling presses the fondant into the silicon blades bit by bit and it gave a cleaner finish than when I tried it the other way. However you choose to do it, there's a definite learning curve with using the onlay, and I wish I'd practised on a dummy before trying it on the cake (you can tell the difference between where I started and where I finished haha). My advice would be to maybe have a play with it on a dummy cake first so you get a feel for it.
