Have A Scrap-Happy September With This House Quilt Block BOM Tutorial

This month’s scrappy block is a house in primary colors. Your little house can be sewn up in whichever color scraps you have handy.

September Scrappy Block

Sew this scrappy house block for September

These little houses would look great lined up in a row for a table runner or as a collection in a quilt full of them! Or simply stitch one and add it to the collection of other scrappy blocks we’ve been sharing all year. The links to those blocks can be found at the end of this post.

Scraps for September BlockStep 1:

Collect and press scraps for the house, roof, door, window and background. The widest piece needed will be 2 1/2” wide, so leftover strips or pre-cuts will work well.

Cutting Pieces for September BlockStep 2:

Cut your scraps into the following sizes:

  • Door fabric: cut one strip 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”
  • Window fabric: cut one square 2 1/2” x 2 1/2”
  • House fabric: cut three strips 1 1/2” x 3 1/2”, one strip 1 1/2” x 2 1/2”, one strip 1 1/2” x 6 1/2”

Arrange the fabrics as shown in the photo above to be sure the colors contrast and you like the combinations. All seams will be sewn with a 1/4” seam allowance.

Press the seams away from the window square.

Sewing the second row to the bottom rowStep 5:

Layer the two 2 1/2” background squares on either end of the roof unit. Draw a line diagonally from one corner to the other with a pencil as shown. Stitch on the drawn line and cut 1/4” away from the stitched line. Discard the extra triangles and press the seams toward the background pieces.

Please change the last background fabric dimension to 2 pcs of 1.5" x 8.5" at the top. The instructions indicate 8.5" when sewing, but I used the sizes at the top to cut my pieces. Oops!
