Where Do New Woodworking Ideas Come From?
George VondriskaAs woodworkers, we’re always searching for fresh woodworking ideas. But how can we consistently find and develop these new ideas? When George recently hosted Jimmy DiResta in his shop, the two experienced makers exchanged tips on how they discover and refine new woodworking concepts.
Some of the techniques they discussed for finding and developing new woodworking ideas include:
Be observant. Train yourself to always be on the lookout for new designs and concepts that could be adapted to your own projects, sometimes in ways the original creator might not have imagined.
Think about ways to improve existing ideas. When working on a new project design, take time to examine existing examples and ask yourself how you can enhance them and make them your own. Sketch your ideas, try out variations, and don’t settle for the first draft.
Keep an “”ideas notebook.”” Jimmy finds that carrying a notebook helps him capture ideas when he sees something inspiring, and it serves as a constant reminder to stay alert for fresh concepts to jot down.
Thinking like a kid can help you approach design with a more playful mindset. Children aren’t bound by tradition or conventions; they see things in a fresh way that can spark creative solutions to design problems.
Whether your next project is for your shop, home, or garden, give yourself the freedom to explore creative woodworking ideas that will add unique character to your design.
