Learn helpful tips and techniques for making and using cardstock stencils to decorate fabric. With fabric markers, paint, or spray paint, you can use a cardstock stencil to customize a ready-made garment or embellish fabric before sewing it into a project. Nicki LaFoille demonstrates how to create and use cardstock stencils for clean, successful results.

To make your stencil, print the desired template onto paper and transfer it to cardstock, then carefully cut out the design with a craft knife. You can also use a cutting machine to quickly and precisely cut the stencil directly from cardstock.

Cardstock works well for stenciling because it can be reused multiple times, unlike freezer paper stencils that are generally intended for one-time use. However, repeated applications of liquid paint or spray paint can eventually weaken the cardstock over time.

When working with spray paint, securing the stencil to the fabric can help produce sharper, cleaner edges. Nicki recommends using a temporary spray adhesive or a glue stick to lightly hold the cardstock stencil in place while you work.

Be sure to protect the surrounding areas of your garment or fabric, particularly when using spray paint, to prevent unwanted overspray beyond the stencil. Cardstock stencils can also be used easily with traditional paint, fabric markers, or pens for different decorative effects.

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions for your chosen spray paint regarding application, additional coats, drying, and setting the paint when required.
