Nicki shows how to create reusable bowl covers in two different methods: one using fabric binding and inserting elastic, and the other by stitching foldover elastic directly to the fabric edges.

Nicki explains the benefits of using laminated cotton for this project. The laminated cotton fabrics featured in this video are from SplashFabric.com. This material is easy to clean by simply wiping away messes, and it’s machine washable, making maintenance even simpler. Nicki also covers the other materials needed, such as the correct size and length of bias binding and elastic.

To begin, Nicki demonstrates how to trace the top edge of a bowl onto the wrong side of coordinating cotton fabric and adds 1 ½” to create a lid that fits snugly. This pattern is then used to cut out a matching circle from the laminated cotton fabric.

With the fabric circles wrong sides together, Nicki shows how to bind the edges, insert the elastic through the binding, and then finish the elastic and binding to make a reusable bowl cover.

For the foldover elastic method, Nicki talks about the ideal width and length of the foldover elastic, then demonstrates how to stitch it into a circle. She also shows how to mark quarters on both the elastic and fabric circles. Finally, she explains how to align the quartermarks, stretch the elastic while sewing, and fold the elastic over the raw fabric edges.
