Quarter Inch Seam Test
Colleen TaukeMastering the basics of any craft is crucial for a successful experience, and quilting is no exception. One of the core skills in quilting is mastering the 1/4″ seam, which pattern designers use as the foundation for fitting all patchwork pieces together. Using this measurement, they plan designs so the pieces will align properly when joined.
In this video, Colleen Tauke, your instructor, will show you several methods to test your 1/4″ seam. She will guide you through cutting three fabric pieces, seaming, and pressing them to check if your seam is accurate. If necessary, you’ll learn how to adjust your seam if it’s too large, too small, or off in some way. Many sewing machine manufacturers offer presser feet specifically designed to help achieve a precise 1/4″ seam, which can be incredibly useful for quilters.
Colleen will also explore alternatives to buying a specialized presser foot. If your sewing machine allows needle position adjustments, you can move the needle to the left or right to use the outer edge of a standard piecing foot as a guide for an accurate seam. Once you’ve perfected the 1/4″ seam, assembling your patchwork quilt top will be much more enjoyable.
When combined with precise cutting and pressing, these core skills will set you up to successfully create nearly any quilt design. Explore our video archives for more tips on specialty tools, patterns, and in-depth quilting courses.
