Description

Creating a woven seat stool is a rewarding and enjoyable project that can result in a cherished family heirloom. It’s also a great way to earn bragging rights, as weaving is a technique few woodworkers have ventured into for their projects. You’ll encounter several new skills while making a woven seat stool, so give yourself plenty of time to research, practice, and be patient as you learn along the way.

When preparing for your woven seat stool project, there are a few things to consider:

Select your weaving material. There are various options for weaving a seat, so choose based on your desired look, what you want to learn, and durability. Some popular weaving materials include strand cane, cane webbing, rattan reed, paper fibre rush, natural rush, leather, oak or hickory bark splint, Danish Modern cord, Oriental seagrass, and paracord. George opted for paracord because it’s durable, comfortable, and relatively easy to work with.

Uncoil the paracord and cut to a manageable length. George recommends cutting the paracord into 30-foot lengths and uncoiling it as you wrap it around a dowel. The dowel will help as you pass the cord through during the weaving process. Uncoiling ensures the paracord lays flat and avoids introducing unwanted twists into the seat’s surface.

Use the proper knots. There are specific knots for three different stages in this project, and George will guide you through each one to ensure you know how and when to use them.

This project has the potential to be a game-changer for you. Take your time, enjoy the process, and learn along the way.
