Granny Square Stripes
Jen LucasDescription
To begin, chain a multiple of 3 + 2 stitches. Jen starts her sample with 23 stitches (21 stitches + 2).
Row 1: Starting in the second chain from the hook, SC in each chain across. Row 2: Ch 3 (counts as the first DC), turn, DC into the first stitch, [skip 2 SC, 3 DC in the next st] until 3 sts remain, skip the next 2 sts, and 2 DC in the last st. Row 3: Ch 3 (counts as the first DC), turn, work 3 DC into each space between DC groups across, and finish by placing 1 DC into the top of the ch-3 turning chain. Row 4: Ch 3 (counts as the first DC), turn, DC in the first stitch, 3 DC in each space between DC groups, ending with 2 DC in the last stitch (the ch-3 turning chain).
Repeat Rows 3 and 4 for the pattern. For the final row, working a row of SC creates a neat edge.
Jen offers helpful tips throughout the video, including her method for keeping the bottom edge looking tidy. She also explains how to determine where to work each stitch and demonstrates how to change colors at the end of the row for the next one.
This delightful stitch pattern is great for using up yarn scraps; it looks wonderful in self-striping yarn or solid colors. There are plenty of variations to explore—feel free to experiment with different stripes or chain spaces between stitches. This video will give you a solid understanding of how the granny stripe stitch works.
