Floral Wall Hanging
Emily SteffenDescription
With just a few clicks, Emily demonstrates how to send your chosen applique shapes from the Singer MySewNet software to the Momento machine. After test cutting with your chosen fabric, Emily demonstrates how to select the correct settings by adjusting for different fabric weights, from lightweight to very heavy and thick fabric substrates, such as the wool felt used in this video.
Make your project even simpler by loading multiple fabrics to cut on the mat at once. Emily then demonstrates how to arrange and adhere the floral pieces onto your canvas fabric using a heat-set glue and the Singer Momento Mini press.
Get creative and add some textural elements to the wall hanging, such as yarn French Knots. To finish the wall hanging, Emily demonstrates how to stitch the front and back fabric pieces together, leaving enough space at the upper edge to stitch a channel to insert a dowel for hanging.
Whatever the project and no matter how complex the shape, the Singer Momento makes cutting fabrics simple and fun.
Hey, everybody. My name is Emily Stefan and I am so excited to share with you this new product that I just added to my craft studio. It is called the Singer Memento and it is a fabric cutter that cuts very quickly super precisely and in tons of different fabric substrates that you can put through the bed of this machine. The bed of the machine is 24 inches. So the sky is the limit on what you can make with this.
And I'm so excited because today we'll be using this thicker kind of wool felt to make this ultra precisely cut floral wall hanging, there's larger cuts, there's smaller cuts. And I'm really excited to show you how I made this. So to send your file to your machine, all you do is simply hit the output button in the myst crafting interface, select the machine and you can either connect your machine via wifi, which is really easy or just use the cord like I have today. I know that I'll be using a 12 by 24 landscape mat because it's gonna go in long ways like I've selected before and then in the um drop down here. There are kind of pre selected loaded fabric types here.
And I um all the difference between these fabric types is how much pressure or how much force is being used by the cutter and then how fast it cuts. I did a couple test cuts which is really great and really easy to use with this machine. I highly recommend any time you're changing your fabric that you just do a little tiny square test cut, which is very easy. And it, it told me that I could use this heavy fabrics interface. And then all I have to do is change the pressure just a little bit more to get through this really thick wool.
And the coolest thing is just that little bit of pressure change cuts through this thick wool like butter. So I will load up my mat by tearing off the plastic. I'm gonna set that aside and I know that my leaves because this is the first little section that we're cutting. My lives are gonna go in this way long and skinny this way. And so I'm just gonna stick my fabric on and it actually grips quite well.
I'm gonna load my mat, make sure that the edges get underneath these little lips. I will hit load back, it loads it right in. Once the bat is detected, I will be able to change my pressure. So based on that test print, I knew, OK, I like this heavy fabrics preset that they have in the interface. But I want just a little bit more pressure to make sure it gets through this really thick kind of compressed wool.
So 1300 with a speed of 400 I have my rotary blade clipped right in there and then all I do is start cutting this thing I think is so mesmerizing to watch because you're watching the little rotary blade go up and down and move across this felt fabric and cut through it like butter because I can see where it's starting to make the cuts and it's making these precise leaf shapes happen. And I'm just imagining having to cut this out by hand and there's no way there's no way I would actually make this wall hanging as beautiful as it is with all these little cuts if I had to cut it out with scissors. So this machine is making this project possible with all these tiny little cuts and it is so cool to watch. So once that you see that your progress is complete with the progress bar, you'll see it says project finished right on the L CD screen here. And I'm able to either choose to repeat my cut, save this cut to the favorites or in this case, I'm just gonna close the screen and then eject my mat.
And this is the cool part I am now able to slowly and carefully see just how precise this cutting is because can you imagine trying to cut these little tiny leaves with a scissors or rotary tool? It just wouldn't happen. I'm just gonna continue removing all these intricate little cuts from my mat and then I will lay them all out on the larger piece of canvas for my floral while hanging and then we'll be back to cut out some more flower petals on the memento. So now that we have the leaves, the intricate leaves and the centers or the stamens cut out of the flowers. I'm gonna move on to the petals.
And the coolest thing about this machine is that I have three different color petals. In my final design, I have like a salmon, a light pink and then a brown. And I'm able to cut all three colors on the 24 inch wide mat at the same, same time. So in my craft space here, I have the three different sections kind of stacked on top of each other, the different petals. And I'm able to lay the fabrics in each chunk onto my mat so that they cut all at the same time, which makes this cutting process even faster.
So if I grab my mat, I'm able to see that this first color, which is my salmon color is gonna measure about to like the seven inch mark on my mat. So 1234567, and I've cut my fabric accordingly and I'll just press that on really well. And then my second color which is my pink goes from like the seven and three quarters. So this is seven and three quarters all the way down to about the 15 inch mark. So 123456, this is the 15 which would be So about here and then this last one which is my brown is the remaining.
Oh I'm gonna make sure this is all on here. So look how fast this is gonna be because I'm able to cut out all three petals at the same time. So I will go back to my So net and I will just do the same as before where I export or output the um design to the machine, load my mat and then on my L CD screen, I just hit start cutting and away the machine works. Mhm Now that everything is cut on the singer Memento, I'm going to eject my mats and start assembling my wall hanging together by taking off my pedal pieces here. OK.
So now that everything is roughly where I want it to be. There's still some adjustments to be made, but it's roughly where I want it to be. I'm going to close up my singer Memento and set my cutting mat aside and I'm gonna get started gluing or adhering all of these pieces down onto my canvas. So I have this little singer memento heat iron. It's just this little guy and I will be using some fabric fusion glue to attach each one of the petals and all the little leaves right onto the wall hanging here.
So my presser mat will go right underneath. And this is kind of one of those steps where you can turn a movie on or enjoy the process because it's kind of therapeutic and it's the same motion over and over again. And I'm simply gonna turn on my little iron and this is like a, a press. This would work with vinyl or even ironing little pieces for quilts or anything. And it's so handy because it's tiny.
So you can get into all these little corners and crevices and I'm able to hold this little press right on top of each petal and it works out awesome because I can put glue on the back of the next pedal while the previous pedal is heating up, activating the glue. But all I'm gonna do is add a generous amount of glue to the back of my pedal. And while it's still wet with this particular brand, the glue has to be wet while I'm heat setting it. And the greatest thing is as that's sitting and heating for a few minutes, I can quicken this process up by adding more glue on to the next pedal. So, so everything looks pretty stuck down with this little press and my heat activated glue So now it's time to add some embellishments and then sew it all together to finish our wall hanging.
I always love adding a lot of textural elements to wall hangings or anything that adds a little bit more interest. So of course, the yarn would be an awesome textural element and I added some French knots already over on this side to the centers or like the stamen areas of my flowers. And I wanna add some to balance it out over on this side. So I already have some thicker yarn threaded with a tapestry needle doesn't have a blunt and it has a sharp end and I'm just gonna poke my needle through the canvas. This is a thicker canvas.
So you might have to give it some muscle and all a French knot is I'm gonna leave my tail under. There is where I'm wrapping my needle 12 or three times around the yarn and then sticking it right back in the hole to kind of make the yarn or the thread bunch up on the surface. And I just think it adds really pretty interest, especially to like a tapestry or wall hanging like this. This is thick yarn. So you kind of have to give it a tug because it's kind of thick.
But I love, oh and it's twisted just a little bit, but I love the way that it kind of balls up and adds some interest. So I'm gonna add a few over here and this, of course, you do not have to add, but I think it looks really good ta da. So I'm gonna tie off my yarn in the back and then just give it a clip. And then next, I'm just gonna head over to my sewing machine to finish stitching this all together before we're done to finish our wall hanging. We are simply gonna put our two pieces of fabric right sides together.
You can see the areas that I stitched those French knots. And then I wanna be careful when I'm sewing to leave enough space at the top to put a channel for my dowel. So I'm just gonna kinda eyeball a little bit. OK. It's, I know my dowel is a half inch, um, thick and diameter dow.
But I need a little bit more than a half of an inch for a channel to be able to put that through. So I will stitch all the way around the outside, leave an opening, flip it right side out and then just make sure I leave space for that channel. So along the edges, I'm simply gonna clip in place and then I'll go over here to my sewing machine and just do a quick stitch. And just remember when I get to the edges, I'm gonna lift up my foot, but keep my needle down to get that nice precise corner and then lower my foot and keep sewing. So now that everything is sewn, I'm going to clip my edges so that it lays nice and flat.
When I flip it right side out, I always like to clip my corner so they're nice and square just at a 45 degree angle to get rid of the bulk. Now, all I'm gonna do is carefully flip this right sides out, making sure to grab your corners and bring them out. If I can grab the fabric. Here we go, you'll work out the corners and work out all the edges to make sure everything is nice and flat and then give it a good press along the edges. Tucking in this seam or this opening, excuse me, where we had just um left open to flip it right side out.
And then the other thing, the last step is to top stitch and then add your channel. So I will top stitch all the way around the outside, all 44 edges. And then I'm gonna do one more along, you know, probably giving myself an inch and a half ish to slip this towel in. So I can easily hang this wall hanging on my wall when we're all done. I think this wall hanging turned out awesome.
And I think we can agree that it would not have turned out as beautiful without the precision cutting of this awesome singer, Memento. I am wildly floored at how quick it was, how precise these little cuts are and just how easy the machine is to use. So this while hanging, the only thing I have left is to add some tassels and find out exactly where I wanna hang it in my house. I hope you love it as much as I do and I hope you are just as impressed with the singer Memento as I am.
Why are no files or templates priovided? At least with a template if you have software to create an *svg or use mySewnet the viewer could make it. Al;so, no mention is made of which mat is being used or what the pressure settings were—this, like most of the Singer videos for the momento is worthless
