Dog Coat
Nicki LaFoilleLearn how to measure your dog and create a custom pattern for a stylish coat that fits perfectly and keeps them warm. Nicki LaFoille walks you through the entire process.
Start by downloading the dog coat worksheet to record your dog’s measurements.
After taking your dog’s measurements, as shown in the video, Nicki demonstrates how to use those numbers to create a pattern. On a large sheet of paper, she explains how to plot the measurement points and calculate the proper shape for the coat.
Nicki also shows how to round the sharp corners of the pattern to make attaching the binding easier. She suggests testing the pattern on your dog once it’s cut out to see if any adjustments are needed.
Nicki discusses different fabric options for the coat, including when to use a double-layer for added warmth. Fleece is a good choice, as it’s both soft and warm.
Once the coat is cut out, you’ll calculate how much binding to cut by measuring the outer perimeter of the pattern and multiplying by two, as the pattern is on the fold. Nicki recommends using knit binding, which helps with curving around tight corners.
Nicki demonstrates how to attach the binding to the right side of the coat, then fold the raw edges to the wrong side and stitch the remaining binding. Finally, she shows how to attach Velcro to the neck and chest straps for easy on-and-off access, especially for wiggly pets.
