Basket Weave Stitch
Brenda K.B. AndersonIn this video, Brenda K. B. Anderson shows how to crochet the Basketweave stitch. This textured stitch uses post stitches to create a dense, woven look. Be sure to download the chart to follow along with the tutorial.
To start, chain a multiple of 6 stitches, plus 2 (one stitch at each end for turning). In her sample, Brenda begins with a foundation chain of 21 and works into the bottom of the chain to start her swatch.
**Row 1:** Start in the third chain from the hook (the first two chains count as the first DC of the row), then DC into each chain across.
**Rows 2-3:** Ch 2 (this counts as the first DC), turn, then [FPDC in each of the next 3 stitches, BPDC in each of the next 3 stitches] across until you have one stitch left (the ch-2 turning chain). DC into the top of the turning chain.
**Rows 4-5:** Ch 2 (counts as the first DC), turn, then [BPDC in each of the next 3 stitches, FPDC in each of the next 3 stitches] across until one stitch remains. DC into the top of the ch-2 turning chain.
Repeat Rows 2-5 for the pattern.
When crocheted tightly, this stitch creates a thick, structured fabric, making it perfect for projects like baskets, pillow covers, blankets, and potholders. If worked with a looser gauge, it’s ideal for scarves, dishcloths, sweaters, or hats. An added bonus is that this stitch is completely reversible.
Brenda offers plenty of helpful tips throughout the tutorial and recommends blocking the fabric to enhance its drape and softness.
