Learn how to add a front pocket to any sweatshirt with ease. Nicki LaFoille demonstrates a simple method for attaching a pocket to a ready-made sweater or sweatshirt. Kangaroo pockets are a common feature on hoodies, and in this video, Nicki explains how to create your own by sharing measurements to draft a custom kangaroo pocket pattern and guiding you through attaching it to the front of an existing garment.

Nicki covers which fabric types work best for the pocket and shows how to draw the kangaroo pocket pattern, including ½” seam allowances.

After cutting out the pocket fabric, you’ll prep it by folding and topstitching along the pocket opening edges. Next, fold and secure the remaining edges—leaving the bottom edge free—using pins, glue, or basting tape. Nicki then shows how to properly center the pocket on the sweatshirt and sew the bottom edge in place, using a stretch stitch to maintain the garment’s flexibility.

She continues by demonstrating how to topstitch the upper edges and angled sides of the pocket to firmly attach it to the sweatshirt. Two rows of topstitching, sewn at ¼” and ⅜”, recreate the polished look found on store-bought hoodies.

With these steps, you can easily add a classic hoodie-style kangaroo pocket to any sweatshirt.
